Global Engagement, Local Impact: USR Initiative Connects International Students to Indigenous Community
True to the spirit of global citizenship and community empowerment, participants of the International Filipino Language and Culture Program and the Green and Global Philippines: Language, Culture, and Sustainability Program 2026 took part in a meaningful University Social Responsibility (USR) initiative at Batong Lusong Elementary School on July 2, 2026.
The impactful day commenced with a courtesy visit to the San Jose City Local Government Unit, where the international delegates were warmly welcomed by Honorable City Mayor James Violago, alongside City Councilors Edward John Divina and Jeni Salvador. The courtesy call served as a venue for insightful discussion regarding the program’s core vision, the immersive experiences of the students thus far, and the vibrant cultural landscape of San Jose City. Local officials expressed their strong support for initiatives that bridge global academic programs with grassroots community development.
Following the courtesy visit, the international students traveled to Batong Lusong Elementary School to connect directly with the local community. Bringing joy and creativity to the classroom, the delegates facilitated an interactive handicraft workshop, teaching the elementary students how to create handmade key chains using colorful strings and intricate beads. Beyond the creative session, the international students also prepared and distributed snacks, sparking bright smiles across the venue.
This empowering community engagement was led by the International Affairs Office team, Mr. Ariel Joseph J. Barza, Mr. Jerome O. Garcia, Mr. Almarc A. Marco, Ms. Gracious T. De Guzman, and Ms. Maria Theresa E. Salazar.
More than just a community outreach, this USR initiative provided the international students with a profound, firsthand understanding of the Philippine basic education system. By immersing themselves in the daily realities of children in an indigenous community, the participants walked away with a deeper appreciation of Filipino warmth and cultural heritage, proving that language and sustainability are best understood when lived and shared.
