2 CLSU undergrads revisit ASEAN-Japan ties, win as best speakers in JENESYS 2024 Online Alumni Conference

March 1, 2024
Enriching their continuous collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICE), two undergraduate students from the College of Science and the College of Business Administration and Accountancy returned as alumni participants and final reporters during the JENESYS 2024 Online Alumni Conference held via Zoom on February 24-26, 2024.

Joining the three-day online program and workshop for previous JENESYS delegates, Peter Anthony Laciste (BS Business Administration – Marketing) debuted as a new member of the Tourism Development Subcommittee, while Peter Ryuken Hermosura (BS Meteorology) returned as a member of the Disaster Prevention Subcommittee.

Representing CLSU and the Philippines in the said event, Hermosura and Laciste engaged in lecture sessions, case study presentations, and student workshops in partnership with JICE and Multilateral Interaction with Students (MIS), a non-profit student organization from the University of Tokyo.

On the first day, Hermosura actively participated in a lecture session on architectural structural technology and design, where Professor Osamu Takahashi from the Tokyo University of Science presented Japan’s advancements in disaster-resilient building techniques and materials, such as polyurea coating, dampers, and cedar reinforcements. Additionally, Laciste joined a talk on creative marketing strategies for sustainable community-based tourism (CBT) in Fujinomiya, Suruga, and Hakone towns organized by Mr. Naohiro Fukawa, Director of Indigo Destinations.

Emphasizing student collaboration for the next two days, the conference continued with case study presentations, brainstorming, and project proposal formulation facilitated by MIS officials. Laciste joined forces with the Tourism Development Subcommittee in assessing the situation of local tourism across ASEAN-Japan, while Hermosura joined the Disaster Prevention Subcommittee’s case study and simulation of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami event, focusing on the disaster-stricken Higashimatsushima City.

On the final day of the conference, both Hermosura and Laciste served as final presenters in the Reporting Session after winning their respective group-based project proposal competitions. Alongside counterparts from Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Timor-Leste, Hermosura pitched ‘EarthQuick’, a proposed educational software application for real-time disaster updates and evacuation information. Meanwhile, Laciste teamed up with Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia in presenting their community-based tourism initiative titled ‘SEA TEAMS: Southeast Asia Tourism Empowerment and Marketing Sustainability’.

Serving as a follow-up to previous JENESYS events in the past decade, the invitational program involved more than 80 alumni participants from the Disaster Prevention, Tourism, Artificial Intelligence, and Population Issue Subcommittees, championing mutual collaboration among former conference delegates across the ASEAN-Japan region.

Before their latest engagement, Hermosura and Laciste previously represented the university in the in-person JENESYS 2023 ASEAN-Japan Students Conference conducted in Tokyo and other cities in Japan last December 10-19, 2023, coinciding with the Commemorative Summit for the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation.
