MS AgEn Student Undertakes Scientific Research Training and Visiting Scholarship at UC Davis, USA

October 2, 2026

Janna Marie C. Garcia, a Master of Science in Agricultural Engineering student from the Institute of Graduate Studies (IGS) of Central Luzon State University (CLSU), undertakes a scientific placement and research training at the University of California, Davis, USA.

She is serving as a Visiting Scholar under the mentorship of Dr. Samuel Sandoval Solis, Professor and Cooperative Extension Specialist in Water Resources. Ms. Garcia was invited by UC Davis to support her master’s thesis, titled “Enhancing Sustainable Irrigation and Water Allocation Models for Climate-Resilient Agriculture in the Philippines”. Her study focuses on water resources planning and management, particularly the application of the Water Evaluation and Adaptation Planning (WEAP) model to irrigation systems such as the Angat-Maasim River System (AMRIS).

As part of the active Agreement of Cooperation between UC Davis and Central Luzon State University (CLSU), Dr. Samuel Sandoval Solis offered specialized training in hydrological processes and water resources allocation modeling. This visit also emphasizes the research collaboration project with the Center for Climate Change and Environmental Management and Philippine Rice Research Institute titled, "Optimal Agricultural Land Use Allocation in the Philippines."

The student will experience hands-on capacity building, field visits, and model development for integrated water resources management to gain firsthand experience in water resources management practices. She is expected to accomplish a comprehensive report and a draft of a peer-reviewed-paper at the end of her training.

This initiative forms part of the ongoing collaboration between CLSU and UC Davis, strengthening international academic partnerships in Agricultural Engineering and allied disciplines.
