Art, Coins, and Connection: International Students Craft Cultural Postcards with CLSU Pigura
Participants of the International Filipino Language and Culture Program 2026 immersed themselves in a Watercolor Postcard Making Session with a theme of “Barya at Bulaklak” (Coins & Blooms), organized in collaboration with the Central Luzon State University (CLSU) Cultural Affairs Office – Pigura Visual Arts Group.
The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Emil F. Ubaldo, Chief of Mobility and Intercultural Exchange Division, who introduced the aesthetic and historical significance embedded in the Philippine New Generation Currency Coin Series. During the session, Dr. Ubaldo provided an engaging overview of the history represented on each coin’s obverse side and showcased detailed illustrations of the endemic flora featured on the reverse sides, highlighting the intersection of national heritage and environmental appreciation.
Each International Student was paired with one local student artist from Pigura, serving as both technical coaches and peer language models, the local artists assisted their international partners in mastering watercolor techniques while engaging in real-time conversational Filipino practice. After crafting their own postcards, the international students presented their finished postcards, explaining the creative inspiration behind their chosen coins and floral elements.
CLSU Pigura, led by Engr. Laila Marie A. Lavandero, is a visual arts group consisting of students with members who share interests in the visual arts and fine crafts. Beyond providing a platform for student artists to refine and showcase their talents, Pigura actively seeks interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships with local and international institutions.
Through this initiative, the IFLCP 2026 not only deepened the international participants’ understanding of Filipino heritage and language, but also demonstrated how art can serve as a universal bridge for artistic expression and meaningful global friendships.
