March 11, 2024
Two undergraduate CLSU students participated in the University Mobility for Asia and the Pacific (UAMP) Discovery Camp 2024: The Globe (Global Bound & Exchange) Discovery Indonesia last February 17 to 29, 2024 in different Indonesian cities.
Karl Aurvin Santos (BS Statistics) and Justine Joyce Tena (BS Civil Engineering) joined their fellow students from ASEAN and East Asian countries in learning about the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by local governments and non-profit organizations across Indonesia as well as exposure to the rich culture of the Indonesian nation.
This year’s edition of the Discovery Camp is led by Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) in collaboration with Universitas Semarang (USM), Universitas Islam Riau, and Institut Teknologi & Bisnis Nobel.
Santos and Tena started their Camp experience at ITS in the Indonesian port city of Surabaya where they learned about the university’s implementation of SDGs 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) as well as conducted site visits, community service, and community visits.
After a week at ITS, Santos headed to Institut Teknologi dan Bismis Nobel Indonesia in the city of Makassar, province of South Sulawesi where he engaged in an entrepreneurship camp, participated in group discussion, and campaigned for SDGs implementation at a local high school.
"During the camp, we did not just learn about the culture of Indonesia, its similarities with our country, the SDGs, its interconnectedness, and how it addresses global issues and challenges. But, they've showed us the aspects of SDGs that they implement in Surabaya, to achieve a Smart City." Santos said.
Meanwhile, Tena continued her program at Universitas Semarang where she was exposed to the university sustainability programs on Mangrove for Coastal Resilience (SDG 11) and the Optimization of Renewable Energy in Fishery (SDG 7).
